The practical driving test eyesight test
At the start of your practical driving test, when you come out of the driving test centre, examiner will ask you to read a number plate on a parked car. You must be able to read (with glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) a car number plate from 20 metres.
If you can’t read the number plate examiner will not take you out for the test and you’ll fail your driving test and the test won’t continue.
If you can’t read the first number plate the examiner might ask you to read another number plate or even will give you a pen and paper to write down the number. If on the second attempt you failed, the examiner will measure the distance using measuring tape to ensure accuracy and then you will be offered a third and final attempt to read the number plate. If the third attempt is not successful then it will result in the driving test being terminated and your driving test fee will be lost.
The normal procedure is if you do fail the eyesight test, the examiner will inform the DVLA and your licence will be revoked. When you reapply for your licence again, the DVLA will request you to take a eyesight test at a driving test centre and pass in order to receive your licence.
You will still be required to take the standard eyesight test when attending your practical driving test.
Just remember it is a legal requirement that if you need your glasses you must wear them or contact lenses every time you drive.
Also if you have got any problem with your eyesight that affects both of your eyes, or the remaining eye if you only have one eye then you must inform DVLA.
